The Roman Bridge (Elguentra)

El Kantara is a Roman bridge spanning the narrow Rhoufi Gorge in Biskra Province, Algeria, built by the Third Augustan Legion in the 1st century AD. The gorge, dubbed Calceus Herculis (Hercules' Kick) by Roman soldiers, is only 40 metres wide but with walls reaching 120 metres high. The bridge enabled caravans and military supplies to pass through this gateway between the Mediterranean Tell and the Sahara. In the 2nd century AD, Syrian archers guarding the town planted the region's first date palm groves. The site is on the UNESCO Tentative List as part of the Oasis Systems of the Rhoufi Gorges.
