Tamarindito is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization situated along an escarpment in the Petén department of Guatemala [1]. During the Early Classic period (c. 300–600 AD), Tamarindito served as the capital of the Petexbatún region in southwestern Petén [1]. The city was eventually displaced by the newly founded conquest state of Dos Pilas, which established hegemony over the region [1]. In the 8th century AD, Tamarindito successfully rebelled against its Dos Pilas overlord and defeated the conquering state, marking a significant reversal of its previous subordination [1]. Following the destruction of the Dos Pilas kingdom, the entire Petexbatún region experienced profound instability, characterized by rapid population decline and social disintegration [1]. By the 9th century AD, Tamarindito was effectively abandoned, reflecting the broader collapse of Classic Maya political structures in the southern lowlands [1].
