Frilford (in Marcham parish) is a major Romano-British religious complex in Oxfordshire featuring a Romano-Celtic temple, a circular rotunda, and what may be an amphitheatre or sacred pool approximately 65 metres in diameter. The temple was erected in the late 2nd century AD with 4th-century extensions, containing painted wall plaster and tessellated pavements. Hundreds of 4th-century coins and thousands of hobnails suggest dedication to Mercury, god of travel. The site includes a mansio (pilgrim way-station) and a cemetery of over 359 graves spanning Roman through early Saxon periods, with some burials in lead coffins.
