Ancient city near modern Annaba in northeastern Algeria, first settled by Phoenicians from Tyre around the 12th century BC. Became a major Roman city in North Africa, home to St. Augustine who served as bishop from 395-430 AD and wrote 'The Confessions' and 'The City of God' here. Archaeological remains include one of the largest Roman forums in Africa, a Christian basilica with baptistery, residential quarters with fine mosaics depicting hunting scenes, and large public baths. The site was cleared by archaeologists between 1945-1964. Now on Algeria's UNESCO tentative list.
