Negrine

Negrine is a town in Tebessa Province, northeastern Algeria, situated at 279 m elevation on the site of ancient Casae Nigrae (also known as Nigrenses Maiores), a settlement of Roman North Africa in the province of Numidia. The area was within the prehistoric Capsian cultural zone (c. 8500-5400 BC) before becoming a Roman settlement. It was the birthplace of Donatus Magnus, founder of the Donatist Church, and served as the seat of a suffragan bishopric during Roman and Vandal times. Extensive Roman ruins survive in the desert between Negrine and Tebessa.
