Roman Ruins of Djemila

Djémila (ancient Cuicul) is a Roman ruins site in northern Algeria, featuring one of North Africa's best-preserved Roman urban complexes [1]. Built on a mountain slope, the site includes a forum, temples, basilicas, triumphal arches and residential houses arranged according to Roman town planning principles adapted to the rugged terrain [2]. Originally established as a military colony for Italian soldiers during the 1st century AD, the settlement evolved into a prosperous trading hub by the late Roman period [2]. The ruins demonstrate the adaptation of classical Roman architecture to a non-Italian landscape, reflecting both military origins and subsequent economic growth [2].
