Bhimashankar Buddhist Caves

One of three groups of Hinayana Buddhist rock-cut caves on Manmodi Hill, about 3 km south of Junnar, Maharashtra, carved between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The Bhimashankar group is named after a large sculpture locally called "Bhima" and features a chaitya hall with a distinctive flat roof, unlike the domed ceilings found in the neighboring Amba-Ambika group. An inscription from 124 CE records a donation by Ayama, minister of the Western Satrap ruler Nahapana.
