Borremose is a raised bog in Himmerland, Denmark, famous for a Pre-Roman Iron Age fortified settlement and three naturally mummified bog bodies discovered between 1946 and 1948. The settlement, built in the 4th century BC, comprised a 140 x 90 m gravel bank enclosed by a 450 m long moat and connected to dry land by a 150 m cobbled road, housing up to 20 longhouses at its peak. The three bog bodies date to approximately 840-160 BC and are among the best-preserved prehistoric human remains from Northern Europe. Borremose was long the only known Iron Age fortified settlement in Scandinavia.
