Gudme

Gudme, meaning 'home of the gods,' was one of Denmark's largest and wealthiest Iron Age settlements on southeast Funen, flourishing from the 3rd to 7th centuries AD with around 500 inhabitants across a magnate's farm and 50 satellite farms. The site has yielded over 10 kg of gold across six hoards plus five silver hoards, making it Denmark's richest Late Iron Age find area. The great hall measured 47 m long and 10 m wide, likely belonging to a prince or king who taxed local farms and the coastal trading center at Lundeborg. Place names like Galdbjerg ('sacrificial mountain') confirm it as a center of heathen worship.
