Hammerum Burial Site

A late Roman Iron Age (200-400 AD) burial site located 5 km east of Herning in central Jutland, Denmark. Discovered in 1993 during road construction, seven graves were found containing remarkably preserved organic materials. The most significant find was Grave 83, known as the Hammerum Girl, which yielded the best-preserved Danish Iron Age textile from an inhumation grave. The young woman's hair and dress survived, revealing fine fibres and styling recognizable throughout Europe, suggesting a mobile, well-connected individual. Blueberry twigs placed beneath her head indicate mourning rituals and compassion among the bereaved.
