Skelhoj is a Bronze Age burial mound near the Kongea River in southern Denmark, measuring 30 metres in diameter and 7 metres high -- the largest of 26 monumental mounds in the area. Constructed around 1400 BC using heather turf sods placed grass-downward in eight equal sections, creating a wheel-like pattern symbolising the sun and cyclical time. Excavated 2002-2004, the mound was found to have been robbed in antiquity and again in the 19th century. Radiating rows of hand-sized stones surrounded the mound and were periodically replaced, suggesting ongoing ritual activity. The site occupied a strategic crossroads of ancient land and sea trade routes.
