Ayanis Kalesi

A 2,700-year-old Urartian fortress built by King Rusa II (r. 685-653 BC) on a hill overlooking Lake Van in eastern Turkey. The citadel features interlocking stone walls engineered to resist earthquakes, with a secondary mudbrick wall reaching 17-18 m high. Excavations spanning 37 years have uncovered bronze shields and a helmet dedicated to the chief Urartian god Haldi. Historical records indicate the fortress was destroyed by an earthquake just 20-25 years after construction. It is considered one of the most magnificent surviving Urartian structures.
