The Khapra Kodiya Caves, part of the Junagadh Buddhist Cave Group in Gujarat, are the oldest caves in the cluster, dating to the 3rd-4th century BCE based on ancient scribbles and cursive letters on the walls[1]. Carved during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, they represent the earliest monastic settlement in the region[1]. These plain caves, also known as Khangar Mahal, lie along the edge of the ancient Sudarshan Lake, just north of Uparkot fort[1].
