Capler Camp

Capler Camp
data.gov.uk · OGL 3

Capler Camp is an Iron Age contour hillfort of approximately 4.6 hectares, positioned on a steep spur promontory overlooking a bend in the River Wye south of Fownhope, Herefordshire. Its defences consist of double and triple ramparts with ditches on the weaker sides, while a sheer drop to the river on the west and north provides natural protection. Excavations by Jack and Hayter in 1924-25 across 15 trenches found evidence of metalworking and Roman influence, including a coin of Empress Lucilla (c. AD 61) now in Hereford Museum. Known as Capelore in the Domesday Book, the name combines "caple" (look-out place) with "ofer" (flat-topped ridge).
