Ayanis Kalesi

A 2,700-year-old Urartian fortress built by King Rusa II on a hill overlooking Lake Van in eastern Turkey [1] [2] [3] [4]. The citadel features interlocking stone walls engineered to resist earthquakes [3] [5]. Excavations spanning 37 years have uncovered bronze shields and a helmet dedicated to the chief Urartian god Haldi [3]. Historical records indicate the fortress was destroyed by an earthquake just 20-25 years after construction [1] [6]. It is considered one of the most magnificent surviving Urartian structures [3] [5].
