Pamukkale ("Cotton Castle") is famed for its white travertine terraces formed by calcite-laden thermal spring waters cascading down a cliff nearly 200 m high. Adjacent to the terraces lies Hierapolis, a Hellenistic spa city established by the Attalid kings of Pergamon in the late 2nd century BC. The site features one of Turkey's largest necropoleis, a Roman theatre seating up to 12,500, colonnaded streets, and Roman baths now housing an archaeological museum. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
