Ancient City of Telmessos

Telmessos was the largest city in ancient Lycia, located near the modern town of Fethiye in southwestern Turkey[1]. The city flourished from approximately 1500 BC to 500 BC, situated on a peninsula with a well-protected harbor separated from the Gulf of Telmessos by a small island[1]. In the Lycian language, the city was known as Telebehi[1]. The site later became known as Anastasiopolis during the Byzantine period, and subsequently as Makri or Macre[1]. Telmessos was strategically positioned near the border between Lycia and Caria, and its maritime significance made it one of the most important coastal cities of ancient Lycia[1]. The ruins include ancient theaters, rock-cut tombs, and substantial architectural remains that testify to the city's historical prominence[1].
