Nordtor Hierapolis

Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamon, preserves its ancient North Gate (Nordtor), a monumental entrance featuring massive carved Ionic pillars flanking stone archways[1]. This well-preserved gateway marked the northern boundary of the Roman city, one of the most significant urban centers in ancient Phrygia[2]. The gate complex includes multiple passageways designed for pedestrian and vehicular traffic, reflecting sophisticated Roman urban planning[1]. Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, flourished as a spa city renowned for its sacred pools and therapeutic hot springs, with the Nordtor serving as a primary access point for visitors and pilgrims arriving from the north[2].
