An ancient Greco-Roman city at Pamukkale in southwestern Turkey, founded as a formal city under the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BC on the site of a 7th-century BC Phrygian temple to Cybele. Famous for its thermal hot springs, the city features a remarkably preserved 15,000-seat Roman theatre, the Temple of Apollo, the toxic-gas Plutonium, and one of the largest ancient necropolises in Anatolia. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Hierapolis was also a major early Christian centre where the Apostle Philip was martyred.
