The Ancient Lycian Mezarı2

The Tomb of Amyntas is a monumental 4th-century BC Lycian rock-hewn tomb carved into the southern cliffs above ancient Telmessos, now the town of Fethiye in Mugla Province, Turkey. Its imposing facade features a triangular pediment supported by columns with Doric-style capitals, designed to resemble a Greek temple front. An inscription identifies the occupant as "Amyntas, son of Hermagios". The elevated placement reflects Lycian belief that winged creatures would carry the dead to the afterlife. It is the largest of numerous rock tombs at the site, reached by climbing 296 stone steps, and exemplifies the aristocratic burial traditions of ancient Lycia.
