Letoon

A sacred Lycian sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Leto and her twin children, Artemis and Apollo, located 4 km south of Xanthos in southwestern Turkey. The site features three adjacent temples dating to the 5th-4th centuries BC, built on a shared platform, along with a nymphaeum and sacred fountain. A trilingual inscription discovered in 1973, bearing text in Lycian, Greek, and Aramaic from 337 BC, proved crucial for deciphering the Lycian language and is now housed in the Fethiye Museum. As the federal sanctuary of the Lycian League, Letoon served as the ceremonial center where religious and political decisions were publicly declared. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 alongside Xanthos.
