A large basaltic rock carving at the archaeological complex of Zonzamas on Lanzarote, Canary Islands, interpreted as a prehistoric lunisolar calendar with 12 solar and 13 lunar months, similar in structure to the ancient Egyptian calendar. Six carved channels represent the first six Canarian months of the Atxano year, which began at the summer solstice. The site is associated with the aboriginal Guanche/Majo culture and is argued to predate Punic or Roman contact, pointing to an Atlantic Bronze Age megalithic cultural horizon. Cart-ruts and Iberian-Guanche rock inscriptions found nearby further suggest a complex pre-classical prehistory for the islands.
