Proserpina Dam

The Proserpina Dam is a Roman gravity dam in Mérida, Spain, built in the 1st or 2nd century AD to supply water to Emerita Augusta, the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania[1]. It formed part of the water supply infrastructure that fed the city through the aqueduct of the Miracles[1]. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the aqueduct fell into decay, but the earth dam with its retaining wall remains in use today[1]. The dam is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993[1].
