Dénia

Denia is a historic coastal city in Alicante province, Spain, with continuous habitation since prehistoric times. Iberian communities first settled on the slopes of Montgo mountain, with fortified sites like l'Alt de Benimaqula dating to the 6th century BC showing evidence of early wine production. The area may correspond to the Greek colony Hemeroskopeion mentioned by Strabo. Under Rome, the city became Dianium, a key imperial port exporting wine and oil. During the Islamic period (713-1244 AD), Denia reached its greatest splendour as capital of an independent Taifa kingdom with its own currency and naval fleet.
