Waqlamarka

Waqlamarka is an archaeological site featuring defensive walls and round burial towers (chullpas) in the Junin Region, Jauja Province, Parco District. The name derives from Quechua: "waqla" (horn) and "marka" (settlement), meaning "horn village". The site's chullpas are part of a broader Andean funerary tradition where above-ground burial towers housed the remains of elite individuals, a practice dating back to at least the Tiwanaku period (c. 500-950 AD) and continuing through the Inca era.
