Túcume

Tucume is a monumental pre-Hispanic complex in Peru's Lambayeque Valley containing 26 enormous adobe truncated pyramids around La Raya Mountain. Established by the Lambayeque/Sican culture in the 10th century AD, it served as a major regional capital through successive Chimu (1350-1450 AD) and Inca (1450-1532 AD) occupations. The largest structure, Huaca Larga, stretches 700 metres long. Huaca las Balsas features remarkable murals depicting ocean waves, sea creatures, and marine birds. Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl directed excavations from 1989 to 1994.
