The Batan Grande or Sican Archaeological Complex in Peru's Lambayeque region was the ceremonial heart of the Sican (Lambayeque) culture, which flourished from approximately 750 to 1375 AD. The complex contains some 50 adobe pyramids, with the Huaca Loro step pyramid serving as the principal ceremonial and administrative center. Considered the largest pre-Hispanic gold and silver production center in Peru, an estimated 90% of gold objects in Peruvian collections originate from this region. The site, located within the Historic Forest Sanctuary of Pomac, also preserves tombs, palaces, and irrigation canals from the middle Sican period (900-1100 AD).
