Markiani

Markiani is an Early Bronze Age fortified settlement on a hilltop on the south coast of Amorgos, Greece, and the first rural settlement of the Early Cycladic period to be systematically excavated. Habitation spans from the Grotta-Pelos culture (c. 3200 BC) through the Kastri culture phase (c. 2200 BC), documenting a thousand years of Cycladic peasant life. The site covers approximately 2,500 square metres and was fortified with a strong wall and reinforcing towers. Finds include tools of stone and bone, a lead seal, clay sealings, and evidence of spinning, weaving, and metallurgy.
