Emporio, Chios

Emporio is a prehistoric settlement on the southeastern coast of Chios, Greece, inhabited from the early Neolithic period around 6000 BC through the early Bronze Age. Excavations by the British School at Athens (1952-1955) revealed ten distinct occupation layers spanning four millennia. The settlement expanded from the harbour area to the fortified Acropolis hill before being destroyed by fire around 1100 BC. Later structures include an 8th-7th century BC Megaron and a Temple of Athena. The site preserves one of the most complete Neolithic-to-Bronze Age stratigraphic sequences in the Aegean.
