Daskalio

Daskalio is a tiny uninhabited islet in the Greek Cyclades, formerly a promontory of Keros before sea level rise separated them. Excavations led by Colin Renfrew from 1987 and continued by the Cambridge Keros Project revealed a major Early Bronze Age settlement that expanded dramatically around 2500 BCE. The islet was extensively terraced with over 10,000 tons of marble quarried on Naxos (10 km away), enhancing its pyramidal shape, while 2018 excavations uncovered advanced metalworking workshops. Thousands of deliberately broken marble figurines and imported stone objects suggest Keros-Daskalio functioned as a major pan-Cycladic ritual centre.
