Sozopol, anciently known as Apollonia Pontica, was founded in 620 BC by Greek colonists from Miletus on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. It grew into a major commercial and shipping center, minting its own coins by the late 6th century BC. The city housed temples to Apollo, including remains discovered on the former island of St. Kirik. Underwater explorations have revealed Bronze Age settlement remains, while recent excavations uncovered a 2,300-year-old water tank and residential structures with murals. Destroyed by Rome in 72 BC, it continued as the smaller town of Sozopolis.
