Buri Burial Mound Field

The Buri Burial Mound Field is the northernmost of three Madinat Hamad burial mound fields in the Northern Governorate of Bahrain, preserving 754 mounds dating from the Early Dilmun period (c. 2200-1750 BCE). One notable mound in the northwestern area, approximately 13 metres in diameter and surrounded by seven smaller subsidiary burials, likely represents the tomb of an elite individual. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 as part of the Dilmun Burial Mounds, which collectively encompass 11,774 mounds across 21 archaeological sites. These tombs, originally cylindrical low towers, reflect a unique burial tradition developed during Bahrain's prosperity as a major ancient trade hub.
