The Roman walls surrounding the Old Town of Lugo in Galicia, Spain, built between 263 and 276 AD to defend the town of Lucus Augusti. The fortifications stretch 2,117 m with heights of 8-12 m and widths up to 7 m, retaining 85 external towers and 10 gates, five of which are original Roman. Built of slate and granite facings with a conglomerate core bound by lime mortar, they are the finest surviving example of late Roman military fortifications in western Europe. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the entire circuit remains intact and walkable. The city celebrates its Roman heritage annually with the Arde Lucus festival.
