The capital of the Hittite Empire during the late Bronze Age, Hattusa was one of the largest fortified cities of the ancient world. Located near modern Boğazkale in central Turkey within the great bend of the Kızılırmak River, the site spans both hillsides. The inner city contained a citadel with administrative buildings, temples, and the royal palace on Büyükkale ridge, while an outer city featured elaborate gateways decorated with relief sculptures. Massive stone walls extended over 6 km, protecting this major political and religious center of the Anatolian Bronze Age. [1]
