Ayazini Kaya Church

A rock-cut Byzantine church in the Phrygian Valley of Afyonkarahisar province, Turkey. The settlement dates to the Phrygian period, but the church was carved during the Byzantine era when the site was renamed Metropolis. Uniquely, the exterior rock face was sculpted to resemble a traditional Byzantine church facade, while the interior features a vaulted ceiling supported by six columns and a deep rock-cut baptistery. The surrounding cliff contains over 300 cave dwellings and 35 chapels, plus Roman-era tombs carved directly above modern Turkish graves.
