The Archaeological Site of Haidra

Haidra preserves the remains of Ammaedara, one of the oldest Roman cities in North Africa, founded in the 1st century AD as a legionary outpost during campaigns against the Numidian leader Tacfarinas. Key monuments include a well-preserved Arch of Septimius Severus (195 AD), underground Roman baths, and the Church of Melleus. The massive Byzantine fortress, built around 550 AD on Justinian's orders, is the largest of its kind in North Africa. The site also preserves evidence of Vandal occupation in the early 6th century.
