Ruins of Roman Theatre

The İznik Roman Theatre was constructed in the 2nd century AD during Emperor Trajan's reign by Governor Plinius of Bithynia, located 90 meters north of the ancient city walls of İznik (ancient Nicaea) [1]. Unique in Turkish architecture, it was built on flat ground and raised with vaults, unlike typical Roman theatres carved into hillsides [1]. The theatre accommodated approximately 10,000 spectators and hosted gladiator fights and other public games [1]. The auditorium and the tunnel where animals were released into the arena are largely preserved [1].
