The ruins of an ancient Mesopotamian city 44 km southeast of Sanliurfa, Turkey, with a history spanning over 5,000 years. First documented in the Ebla tablets around 2300 BC, Harran served as a major trade center on routes toward Nineveh. It was a primary sanctuary for the moon god Sin and housed a Sabian cult blending Neo-Platonic philosophy with Babylonian astrology. In 744-750 AD, Caliph Marwan II made it capital of the Islamic Empire and built the Ulu Cami mosque (104x107 m), believed to be Turkey's first purpose-built mosque. The Roman general Crassus famously suffered defeat at the Battle of Carrhae here in 53 BC. The city features distinctive cone-shaped beehive dwellings whose basic design has persisted for nearly 3,000 years.
