Tunel Wielki

Tunel Wielki ("Big Tunnel") is a cave in Ojcow National Park, Poland, located in the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland about 20 km north of Krakow [1]. Flint tools discovered during 1967-68 excavations were initially dated to 40,000 years ago, but recent analysis by Dr. Malgorzata Kot revealed they are approximately 450,000-550,000 years old, crafted by Homo heidelbergensis, making them among Poland's oldest artifacts [1] [2]. The cave's 4.5-metre-deep sediments contain 15 layers spanning from Lengyel, Funnelbeaker, Corded Ware, and Lusatian cultures to the Middle Ages [1]. Only two other Polish sites have yielded equally ancient flint tools [2] [3].
