Dainzú is a Zapotec archaeological site in the eastern Central Valleys of Oaxaca, 19-20 km southeast of Oaxaca de Juárez[1][2]. First occupied 700-600 BC, it reached its main phase between 200 BC and 350 AD, contemporary with Monte Albán and Mitla[1][2]. The site was excavated in 1965 by Mexican archaeologist Ignacio Bernal[1]. Known for its carved stone pillars and ceremonial structures, Dainzú represents an early Zapotec settlement that flourished before Monte Albán became the dominant regional center[1][2].
