Petrovka Settlement

The Petrovka fortified settlement is the namesake of the Sintashta-Petrovka culture, located on the Ishim River in Zhambyl District, North Kazakhstan Region. Dating to approximately 2000-1700 BC, the settlement features earthen ramparts with a surrounding ditch (2-3 metres wide) and timber-reinforced walls protecting dense rows of multi-room dugout houses (140-270 sq m). Excavations revealed specialized metallurgical workshops with furnaces and tuyeres for producing bronze tools from copper-arsenic alloys, as well as paired horse burials and cheek-pieces indicating early chariot technology. The site exemplifies the highly nucleated, walled settlements characteristic of this Late Bronze Age culture.
