Ukonkivi

Ukonkivi ("Ukko's Rock") is a sacred Sami site on Ukonsaari island in Lake Inari, Finnish Lapland. The roughly 300-meter-long, 30-meter-high rocky island was considered an extremely important sieidi (sacred natural formation) by the Inari Sami, used as a sacrificial site perhaps into the 19th century. In 1873, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans discovered silver jewelry remnants in a cave on the island, one of Lapland's most significant archaeological finds. A second seita was discovered by Finnish archaeologists in 2007. The site has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status.
