Kierikki

One of Finland's most important Stone Age archaeological sites, located in Yli-Ii by the Ii River. Excavations since the 1960s revealed that northern Finland's Stone Age inhabitants were not nomads but lived in permanent year-round villages sustained by large-scale fishing and seal hunting, dating to c. 3500-3100 BC. Finds include Stone Age birch bark chewing gum (discovered 2007), flint arrowheads traded from Russia, and Baltic amber ornaments. The Kierikki Stone Age Centre, opened in 2001, houses the largest log building in Scandinavia.
