Maen Castle

Maen Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort (cliff castle) on a dramatic headland near Land's End in Cornwall[1]. One of only two fortified sites in Cornwall where Early Iron Age pottery has been found, excavations in 1939 and 1948-9 yielded approximately 300 pottery sherds[1]. The defences comprise a stone rampart, ditch and counterscarp bank built across the neck of the headland, with near-vertical cliffs on two sides and a steep slope on the third, creating a naturally fortified position[1].
