Syria(1st–2nd c. AD) Palmyra, Syria, contains the monumental ruins of a major ancient cultural centre where art and architecture merged Graeco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences. The site's Monumental Arch, built in the 3rd century during Septimius Severus's reign, became a main attraction until destroyed by ISIS in 2015, though much stonework survives for potential reconstruction.[1]
