Temple of Baalshamin

(2nd c. BC - 131 AD, destroyed 2015) Ancient temple in Palmyra dedicated to Baalshamin, the Canaanite sky deity. Earliest phase dates to the late 2nd century BC. The altar was built in 115 AD. Substantially rebuilt in 131 AD by Palmyrene official Male Agrippa to commemorate Emperor Hadrian's visit. Combined Roman and Syrian architectural traditions with six Corinthian columns. Converted to a church in the 5th century AD. Destroyed by ISIS on 23 August 2015.
