Phaselis was an ancient Greek and Roman port city on the coast of Lycia, founded around 700 BC by settlers from Rhodes. The city had three natural harbors and became a major trading center. Alexander the Great wintered here in 334 BC during his Persian campaign. Remains include a 3rd-century BC temple dedicated to Hermes and Hestia, a 2nd-century Roman theatre seating 1,500, a well-preserved aqueduct, and a monumental gate built for Emperor Hadrian's visit in 129 AD. The city was eventually abandoned in the 13th century following devastating earthquakes.
