Ness of Burgi Fort

An Iron Age blockhouse fort on a dramatic promontory at the southern tip of Mainland, Shetland, probably built around 100 BC. The rectangular blockhouse measures roughly 23 m by 5.5 m with walls 1.5 m high, featuring a central passage with corbelled chambers on either side. On the landward side, two rock-cut ditches flank a broad rampart, while steep sea cliffs provide natural defense on all other sides. One of only five blockhouse forts known in Shetland, it was excavated in 1935 and its relationship to nearby brochs at Old Scatness and Jarlshof remains debated.
