Broch of West Burrafirth

Iron Age broch on the Holm of Hebrista, a low rocky islet in West Burra Firth on Mainland Shetland, accessible only by boat or at very low tide. The ruined structure retains a blocked entrance with two flanking guard cells and four internal mural cells, two of which are distinctive dumb-bell shapes connected by short passages. The Norse named the surrounding inlet Borgarfjord (fjord of the borg) after the broch, a name recorded in a 1299 document in Old Norse. The site is a scheduled monument.
