Knap of Howar

The Knap of Howar on Papa Westray in Orkney, Scotland, is a Neolithic farmstead dating to approximately 3700-2800 BC, making it among the oldest standing stone buildings in northwest Europe. The site comprises two connected stone structures: a main dwelling (35x18 ft) with a central hearth and stone furniture, and a smaller workshop (25x12 ft), with walls surviving to 1.6 metres high. Excavations revealed Unstan ware pottery, stone tools, and evidence of farming (barley, wheat, cattle, sheep) and fishing. First rediscovered in the 1930s, it is now managed by Historic Scotland.
